Abstract

The idea of empowerment has influenced the minds of many people in the last few decades. Empowerment is seen by politicians and social activists as an effective answer to the problems of oppression, exploitation, injustice, and disease that plague society. This premise places empowerment as an important factor in efforts to solve existing social problems. Several previous studies on empowerment have examined how empowerment functions to solve the problems of poverty, underdeveloped communities, the role of women and various problems in the social sphere. However, there is no systematic literature review that can help review the extent to which empowerment has developed, especially in muslim countries. Meanwhile, this study aims to review the study of empowerment and microfinance institutions as an effort to find opportunities for field studies in the future. Using a systematic literature review, it will be able to compile theoretical and empirical studies that are published in reputable journals. The results of this study are expected to provide a scientific contribution in the field of economics. In addition, the results of this study are also useful for microfinance institutions to consider their empowerment performance. This consideration is needed to help formulate policies related to the development of empowerment programs.
